VOLLEYBALL SIGNS EL PASO’S ASHLEY NEWCOMB TO NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT
11/16/2009
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State head volleyball coach Ruben Volta announced today that prep middle/rightside hitter Ashley Newcomb (Franklin High School in El Paso, Texas) has signed a National Letter of Intent, and will enroll at Sacramento State as a freshman in the fall of 2010.
A 6-foot-2 native of El Paso, Newcomb helped lead Franklin High School’s varsity squad to three consecutive district championships (2006-08) and a district runner-up finish this past season. An all-conference selection in 2008 (all-conference awards have not been handed out yet this season), she finished 2009 with 226 kills, 159 blocks and a .308 hitting percentage. That breaks down to averages of 1.85 kills and 1.30 blocks per set. Over the last three seasons, Franklin has combined for a 66-17 overall record and a 42-3 conference mark.
“Ashley brings size and versatility to our team in that she can play both the middle and rightside hitter positions,” Volta said. “She blocks really well, has a very competitive attitude and plays with a lot of fire.”
Sacramento State (16-14, 6-8 Big Sky Conference) has just two matches remaining in the 2009 season, and both will come at home this week against Portland State on Friday, and Eastern Washington on Saturday. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
