VOLLEYBALL COMPLETES RECRUITING CLASS WITH SIGNING OF SADDLEBACK’S CHELSEA GOODSELL

4/17/2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State volleyball program completed its recruiting class for the 2007 season with the signing of Saddleback Valley Club’s libero Chelsea Goodsell, it was announced today by Hornets’ head coach Debby Colberg. Goodsell joins three other players who signed with the Hornets last fall, and will enroll at Sacramento State as a freshman in the fall of 2007.

Goodsell, a 5-2 libero from Laguna Niguel, Calif., could replace Kristin Lutes, who was a three-time Big Sky Conference Libero of the Year during her four-year tenure with the Hornets. Goodsell has spent the last nine years playing club volleyball for juniors powerhouse Saddleback Valley. In fact, she has been the starting libero for teams that have finished no worse than second at each of the last three Volleyball Festivals.

Last summer, she started for Saddleback’s 18-under team which finished second out of 105 teams at the Volleyball Festival. In 2005, she played for the 16-under team that placed second out of 224 teams, and in 2004, she played for the 15-under team that placed first out of 81 teams at the festival. Saddleback does not take stats or distribute individual awards.

“I’m very excited about the addition of Chelsea to our team,” Colberg said. “She is as talented as Kristin (Lutes) in terms of defense, passing skills and serving. Chelsea will bring a court presence that most freshmen do not have, and has great leadership skills and a very competitive demeanor.”

Goodsell also played three years of volleyball (2003-05) for Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, Calif, as the team’s setter. A team MVP in 2004 and 2005, she will graduate from Dana Hills this spring.

Goodsell completes a four-player recruiting class that also includes outside hitters Cayti Crowton (Golden Sierra High School) and Whitney Mendivil (Pleasant Grove High School), and middle hitter Maddison Thivierge (Ashland High School). All four players will be freshmen at Sacramento State.

Sacramento State finished the 2006 season with a 30-6 overall record while also winning the Big Sky Conference’s regular season and tournament championships. The Hornets, who have posted a 799-284 record during Colberg’s 31-year tenure with the team, have won 10 straight Big Sky regular season and/or tournament championships and have advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times in the last 10 seasons.
