CHALK UP ANOTHER BIG SKY PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD FOR HAUPT

10/31/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For the second-straight week, sophomore middle hitter Lindsay Haupt earned Big Sky Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honors after leading the Hornets to victories over both third-place Eastern Washington and second-place Portland State.

In two matches last week, the Etna, Calif., native combined to record 3.57 kills and 2.43 blocks per game to go along with a .449 hitting percentage. She accumulated 25 kills with just three errors in 49 total attacks, and 17 total blocks over that span. With the wins last week, the Hornets (20-7, 10-1) are now just one conference victory shy of winning the Big Sky regular-season championship.

In the Hornets’ three-game sweep of Eastern Washington on Thursday, Haupt tallied 13 kills, a team-high tying four blocks and a match-best .550 hitting percentage (13-2-20). In Saturday’s showdown with Portland State, Haupt posted 12 kills, a .379 hitting percentage (12-1-29) and a career-high 13 blocks. The 13 blocks, which included three solo blocks, tied for the third most in Sacramento State Div. I (1991-pres.) single-match history.

Haupt’s week continued a remarkable run in which the middle hitter has now hit better than .310 in 10-consecutive matches (all Hornet victories). She is hitting .441 (104-15-202) over that span with double figures in kills in all but two of those contests. Against Big Sky competition, she is hitting a team-high .379 and leads the conference in blocks per game (1.87 bpg) and ranks second in hitting percentage. Overall this year, Haupt is averaging 1.53 blocks per game, which ranks her among the top 30 players in the nation in that category.

As a team, Sacramento State has now earned four conference player of the week awards this year. Haupt has won the last two awards, and sophomore middle hitter Michelle Franz earned the honor back-to-back weeks on Sept. 19 and Sept. 26.

Sacramento State has won 10 matches in a row (the most since the 1998 squad won 15 in a row), 14 of the last 15, and 19 of the last 21. The Hornets, who have won either the Big Sky’s regular season and/or tournament championship each of the last eight years, have three conference contests remaining on the regular-season schedule, beginning this week on the road against both Idaho State (Friday, Nov. 4) and Weber State (Saturday, Nov. 5).
