ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Former Sacramento State setter and four-time all-Big Sky Conference selection Lisa Beauchene was named assistant volleyball coach at New Mexico, it was announced by the Lobos'' head coach Kelley McKee. Beauchene, who was a graduate assistant coach for the Hornets in 2004 and served as head coach for the Sacramento State women''s club volleyball team in 2004-05, will train setters and play a key role in developing a multi-tempo offense for the Lobos, according to McKee.
Beauchene''s hiring adds another name to an already long list of former Hornets who are currently in the coaching ranks and played under Sacramento State head coach Debby Colberg. That list is now comprised of Beauchene, Sharon Clark (head coach at Butler), Maureen Rafferty (head coach at Seton Hall), Sarah Chlebana (assistant coach at Syracuse), Jamie Holmes (assistant coach at Ohio State) and Jackie Ponciano (head coach at Diablo Valley Junior College).
"This is a really nice opportunity for Lisa and she will learn a lot working for Kelley McKee," Colberg said. "She will be working with the setters at New Mexico, and all her training over the years will help. Lisa is bright, personable and knowledgeable, and that is a good combination to have as a coach."
Beauchene, who played from 2000-03, established herself as one of the top players in Sacramento State (2000-03) history as she is the school''s all-time leader in career hitting percentage (.348) and triple-doubles (18) while also ranking third in assists (5,153), eighth in digs (1,417) and 10th in both service aces (107) and solo blocks (49). The Auburn, Wash., native, who never missed a match during her entire four-year career, started 131-consecutive contests and led the Hornets to the Big Sky Conference regular season and/or tournament championship each of her four seasons.
A unanimous first team all-Big Sky selection during her final three years with the program, Beauchene had an incredible senior season which saw her named AVCA all-Pacific Region, Big Sky MVP and Big Sky Tournament MVP while also being named to five all-tournament teams and earning Big Sky Player of the Week honors a conference-record tying five times. She earned Big Sky Tournament MVP honors three times during her career, becoming the first player in conference history to accomplish the feat.
Beauchene received Sacramento State Senior Female Student-Athlete of the Year and Big Sky Conference Scholar-Athlete honors in 2004, and was a recipient of Hornet Bookstore Student-Athlete of the Week honors three times. During the final eight years of Beauchene''s volleyball playing career (four years of high school and four years of college), she was part of a championship team all eight seasons, winning four district championships at Tacoma''s Fife High School and four Big Sky championships with the Hornets.
