VOLLEYBALL RECORDS BIGGEST BLOWOUT IN SCHOOL HISTORY IN DEMOLITION OF ISU

11/11/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Three Hornets had double figures in kills (led by senior Emily Wilson’s 12) as the Hornets recorded the biggest blowout win in school history with a 3-0 (30-10, 30-9, 30-14) victory over Idaho State in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match Thursday evening at the Hornets Nest.

Idaho State scored a combined 33 points in the match, easily the lowest total by a Sacramento State opponent since NCAA volleyball went to rally scoring in 2001. The previous Sacramento State opponent low was 46 points in a 30-16, 30-13, 30-17 victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 2002. In fact, tonight’s match under the previous scoring rules would have ended in a 15-0, 15-0, 15-1 Sacramento State victory. Idaho State recorded just two points off its serve during the entire contest. Tonight’s time of match (1:03) was also the Hornets’ quickest since the NCAA went to rally scoring.

Sacramento State’s .452 hitting percentage was the second-best mark in the school’s Div. I history (1991-pres.) as the team had just seven errors with 54 kills in 104 total attacks. The Hornets hit .415, .467 and .485 in games one through three, respectively. Sacramento State improved to 22-7 overall and 10-3 in the Big Sky as the team is now 1.5 games back of first-place Eastern Washington (who plays on Friday) with one match to play. Eastern Washington travels to Montana on Friday and Montana State on Saturday.

Idaho State, which defeated Sacramento State (3-1) earlier this season, dropped to 11-16 and 7-6 in the Big Sky. The Hornets improved to 17-2 all-time against the Bengals. Sacramento State is now 12-1 at home this season (6-0 in the Big Sky) as the Hornets have won 39-consecutive regular-season matches against Big Sky competition at home.

Wilson’s 12 kills accompanied a .500 hitting percentage (12-1-22) as six different Hornets hit at least .500. That list includes sophomore Shannon Roland (10 kills, career-high .643), junior Shannon Arts (three kills, .750), senior Stephanie Gamst (five kills, .625), junior Natalie Melcher (five kills, .500) and sophomore Leah Klemenhagen (one kill, 1.000). Sophomore Atlee Hubbard joined Wilson and Roland in double-figure kills with 10. Wilson, who finished with a match-high five blocks, had as many kills (seven) in the first game as the entire Idaho State team.

Jackie Coudert and Mallory Hook each had 12 digs while Bandimere had 11 as the Hornets outdug Idaho State, 49-39. Bandimere became the second Sacramento State player in the last four years to join the 400-400 club as she now has 445 kills and 409 digs this season.

Despite the match lasting just three games, Sacramento State had 31 more kills (54-23), a substantially better hitting percentage (.452-.010), and more assists (48-22), service aces (7-0) and team blocks (8-3). Idaho State had almost as many errors (22) as kills (23) in the match.

Ali Gorny led Idaho State with seven kills while Ashley VanderBloomen had a team-best 15 digs. Kamie Olsen (five kills, .400) was the only Idaho State player with a hitting percentage above .167.

In the first game, Sacramento State used a 15-0 run to take a commanding 20-5 lead. Hook served out 14 of those points during the run as the Hornets had little trouble closing out the game. In fact, Hook accounted for 22 points during the match with her serve.

In game two, Idaho State had more errors (eight) than kills (six) as Sacramento State led from start to finish. The Hornets jumped out to a 17-4 lead and won the game by 21 points. The Bengals’ nine points was the lowest amount (excluding game five scores) the Hornets have allowed in a game this season.

The Hornets ended game three on a 17-2 run, pushing a 13-12 lead to a 30-14 final score. Roland served out the final seven points of the match.

Sacramento State concludes the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 13, against Weber State at 7 p.m. Prior to the match, Hornet seniors Bandimere, Coudert, Gamst and Wilson will be honored for their contributions to the program.
