DAVIS, Calif. – Senior Sandra Bandimere led all players with 13 kills while senior Emily Wilson tallied 11 kills and a .550 hitting percentage to lead Sacramento State to a 3-0 (30-17, 30-19, 30-16) sweep of UC Davis in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday evening at The Pavilion.With the victory, Sacramento State improved to 18-6, its best record after 24 matches since the 1997 squad also began the year with an 18-6 mark. In addition, the Hornets have now defeated UC Davis on nine-straight occasions dating back to the 1992 season. Sacramento State improved to 45-16 over the Aggies in the all-time series between the two teams.
The Hornets, who improved to 17-0 when winning the first game of a match this season, jump back into Big Sky Conference play later this week with home matches against Montana (Thursday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m.) and Montana State (Saturday, Oct. 30, 7 p.m.). Tonight’s match marked the final non-conference contest of the season for the Hornets.
With the loss, UC Davis dropped its 11th-straight match and fell to 1-17 this season. The Aggies failed to reach 20 points in any game during the match, becoming the third Sacramento State opponent to be held under 20 in all three games (Colgate and Seton Hall) this year.
In addition, Sacramento State limited UC Davis to a -.016 hitting percentage, becoming the third Hornet opponent to hit for a negative percentage this year (Seton Hall and Northern Arizona). The Hornets dominated the Aggies in nearly every statistical category, including kills (48-28), hitting percentage (.281- -.016), assists (42-26), digs (60-50) and team blocks (9-0).
Bandimere’s 13 kills accompanied 13 digs as the outside hitter tallied her team-best 15th double-double of the season. Wilson ‘s 11 kills came without an error in 20 attacks as she was one of three Hornets to hit at least .400 (freshman Lindsay Haupt-five kills, .400 hitting percentage; sophomore Shannon Roland-two kills, 1.000 hitting percentage; junior Natalie Melcher-two kills, .667 hitting percentage). Haupt led the Hornets with five blocks while Wilson posted four.
Four Hornets had double figures in digs, comprised of Bandimere, senior Stephanie Gamst (five kills, 13 digs), junior Mallory Hook (11 digs) and senior Jackie Coudert (10 digs).
UC Davis was led by Nicole Read’s seven kills while Katelyn Astruc tallied a match-high 15 digs.
In the first game, Bandimere led all players with five kills as Sacramento State used a 17-8 run to erase a 9-5 deficit and take a 21-15 lead. After the Aggies strung together consecutive points to close within, 21-17, the Hornets scored nine unanswered points to take the game. Wilson served eight of those points, including two aces during the run. UC Davis was held to a -.023 hitting percentage in the frame.
In the second game, Sacramento State never trailed the entire way as the Hornets hit .200 compared to UC Davis’ .024 mark. Wilson led all players with six kills while sophomore Atlee Hubbard added five of her eight kills for Sacramento State.
In the third game, UC Davis led briefly (2-1), but the Hornets went on a 3-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way. The Aggies posted more errors (nine) than kills (seven) in the frame as UC Davis was limited to a -.049 hitting percentage.
