SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Five Sacramento State volleyball players were selected to the all-Big Sky Conference team, highlighted by senior setter Lisa Beauchene being named conference MVP, it was announced today.Beauchene joins Tasman Dwyer (2001), Maureen Rafferty (1999) and Jill Haas (1996) as the fourth Sacramento State player to be named Big Sky MVP since the team joined the conference in 1996. Joining Beauchene on the all-conference team are senior right-side hitter Kazmiera Imrie (first team), junior Sandra Bandimere (second team), junior Emily Wilson (honorable mention) and freshman Kristin Lutes (Libero of the Year).
The Auburn, Wash., native, who was also selected unanimously to the first team for the third-consecutive year, currently ranks first among team leaders in triple-doubles (seven), double-doubles (23), hitting percentage (.347) and assists (10.96 per game), second in service aces (0.28 per game) and blocks (0.94 per game), third in digs (3.06 per game) and fifth in kills (2.16 per game). Beauchene, who has never missed a match during her four-year career and has started 128-consecutive contests, currently leads the Big Sky in both double-doubles and triple-doubles. She was named to the all-tournament team at all four tournaments the Hornets participated in this year. The team co-captain recently became the first player in Sacramento State history to rank among the school’s top 10 career list in kills, digs, assists, hitting percentage, service aces and blocks.
Imrie, who received second team honors last year and honorable mention honors in 2001, is second on the Hornets in hitting percentage (.320) and kills (3.10 per game). The Fairfield, Calif., native has posted double figures in kills 22 times and has recorded hitting percentages of at least .400 on nine occasions. Among Big Sky leaders, the team co-captain is fifth in hitting percentage and 10th in kills. In the Sacramento State program record book, Imrie is tied for fifth in total blocks (396), seventh in solo blocks (47) and hitting percentage (.280), and ninth in kills (1,068).
Bandimere, who earned honorable mention honors last year, leads the Hornets and ranks fifth in the Big Sky with 3.86 kills per game. The Roseville, Calif., native has led or shared the team lead in kills in eight of the Hornets’ last nine matches and 22 contests overall this season. Lately, Bandimere has been playing her best volleyball of the season as she is averaging 5.67 kills per game over her last four matches. She has recorded double-figure kills in a team-leading 25 matches this season and is already ninth in program history with 905 career kills.
Wilson received all-Big Sky honors for the first time in her career as the Vacaville, Calif., native leads the Hornets and ranks fourth in the Big Sky with 1.27 blocks per game. Wilson is third on the team with a .289 hitting percentage, including a career-high .500 mark against Idaho State earlier this season. She has started all but one match this season and has tallied at least six blocks in 13 matches (including a career-high 13 blocks vs. Santa Clara on Sept. 30).
Lutes received the league’s top libero award while leading the Big Sky with 4.02 digs per game. The Kent, Wash., native has tallied double figures in digs in all but three matches this season and has led or shared the team lead in that category 18 times. Against Big Sky competition, Lutes is averaging a conference-best 4.36 digs per game. She was also named tournament MVP of the Panther Invitational (Sept. 12-13), a rare accomplishment for a libero.
All five players have been major contributors to a Sacramento State team that finished the regular season with a 21-11 overall record and a 12-2 mark in the Big Sky. The Hornets are the No. 2 seed in the Big Sky Tournament which will be played this Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 20-22, in Cheney, Wash. By virtue of their No. 2 seed, the Hornets receive a first-round bye and will play Friday night in the semifinals at 6 p.m. The winner of the Big Sky Tournament receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
