SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State volleyball program announced today that three student-athletes, Jenny Ferguson, Leah Klemenhagen and Shannon Roland, have signed National Letters of Intent and will enroll as freshmen at Sacramento State in the fall of 2003.Ferguson, a 5-9 outside hitter from Chico, Calif., has played three years of varsity volleyball at Pleasant Valley High School in Chico. A two-time first team all-Eastern Athletic League selection, Ferguson has led the Vikings to three-consecutive North Section championships and a combined record of 110-13 over the last three years.
A National Honor Roll member and the Student Body Commissioner of Athletics at Pleasant Valley, Ferguson was named section MVP as a junior after recording a state-record 595 kills (shattering the previous record of 491). Pleasant Valley is currently in the regional finals of the CIF State Volleyball Championships.
“I really like Jenny’s all-around volleyball skills and she’ll be one of the more solid passers we’ve ever had here,” Sacramento State head coach Debby Colberg said. “She’s extremely competitive and has a good offensive game to go along with very impressive floor skills.”
Klemenhagen, a 6-1 middle hitter from North Bend, Ore., was a three-year varsity starter at North Bend High School. A three-time all-Midwestern League selection, she was named to the first team each of the last two years while receiving league MVP honors as a senior. She was third in the voting for league MVP honors as a junior. Klemenhagen, who is a member of the national honor society, led the Bulldogs to an undefeated record in league play and an appearance in the state championships this season.
“Leah is going to be a strong player at the net,” Colberg said. “ We like her arm swing and her power, and she’ll give us more depth at the middle position.”
Roland, a 5-10 outside hitter from Newcastle, Calif., was a three-year varsity player at Del Oro High School in Loomis, Calif. A three-year all-Sierra Foothill League selection (including first team honors as a senior), Roland led the team in both kills (159) and digs (207) over 12 league matches as a senior. She was named the team’s best all-around player as a senior and best offensive player as a sophomore and junior. This past season, Roland led Del Oro to an appearance in the Div. III section playoffs.
“Shannon has a solid all-around game and has very nice size for an outside hitter,” Colberg said. “She hits a very heavy ball and will bring a good deal of heat on the right or the left side.”
The signing of Ferguson, Klemenhagen and Roland mark the first Sacramento State signees of the year. The Hornets, who are currently 24-10 overall this season and were crowned Big Sky Conference Tournament champions, will face defending national-champion Stanford this Friday, Dec. 6, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
