WOMEN'S SOCCER PASSES EXHIBITION TEST AGAINST CHICO STATE, 1-0

CHICO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's soccer team started off the 2008 season on the right foot, defeating Chico State 1-0 in exhibition action on Friday, Aug. 15.
Both teams started the match slow in the first half, with the Wildcats outshooting the Hornets, but by a mere 4-to-3 margin. Sacramento State's defense dominated the second half of play, as the Hornets held the preseason No. 24 team in Division II to just one second half shot.
The matches lone tally came in the 57th minute, as freshman Victoria Ramirez took a feed from junior Kim Kemper and slotted a deep shot into the top-left corner of the goal to give the Hornets a 1-0 victory. Ramirez, along with fellow freshmen Jordan Carlberg and Jessica Gregory, combined for seven of the team's 12 shots, including all three of their shots on goal. Kemper (3), and sophomore Cori Shreve (2) combined for the team's other five shots.
Senior Jenny Lawrence posted a clean sheet, saving all three shots sent her way during the 90 minutes of play. Lauren Vance played in goal in the first half for the Wildcats, posting the team's two saves.
The Hornets open regular season play on Friday, Aug. 22 as they travel to Stockton to face the Pacific Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Amos Alonzo Stagg Stadium.
