4/22/2008

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Sacramento State women’s golf team had the second biggest turnaround on day two of the Big Sky Conference Championship but still remain in sixth place after the team shot 307 on Tuesday.  The Hornets improved their first-round score by 14 shots on the Foothills Golf Club layout but only managed to keep pace with the rest of the field.

Portland State took the 36-hole lead after firing a second round 297 and holds a six shot advantage over Northern Arizona (302-307-609) heading into tomorrow’s final round. First-round leader Eastern Washington (300-310-610) fell to third place, seven shots off the pace. Sacramento State (321-307-628) is 11 shots out of fourth-place, which is currently held by both Montana (310-307-61) and Northern Colorado (308-309-617). Montana State (326-314-640), Weber State (327-320-647) and Idaho State (336-321-657), who finished 15 strokes better than yesterday, round out the scoring.

Sophomore Brooke Green
led the Hornets with a 1-over 73 and is tied for eighth place at 9-over 153. She birdied the 135-yard, par 3 fourth hole leading to an even par front nine. After bogeying holes 13 and 15 on the back nine, Green birdied the par-3 16th to get her back to 1-over for the round. Senior Heather LeMaster came back from her opening-round 85 to shoot a 2-over 74, the biggest turnaround for an individual in the second round. LeMaster struggled on the front nine, posting a double-bogey, four bogeys and two birdies, but shot a 2-under 34 on the back nine. She birdied holes 11, 12, 14 and 17 to go along with bogeys at 13 and 18. Her two-round total of 159 puts her in a tie for 24th place.

The Hornets were also received a 78 from freshman Samantha Saffold and identical rounds of 82 from Erica Yoshino and Kim Coppin.
