VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO 20TH-RANKED HAWAI’I IN 2ND ROUND OF THE RAINBOW WAHINE INVITATIONAL

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Hawai'i hit .345 and saw four starters hit better than .300 on the way to a three-set sweep (25-19, 25-17, 25-18) of Sacramento State in the second round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Friday evening.

The loss dropped the Hornets to 2-4 overall and 0-2 at the four-team tournament hosted by Hawai'i. Sacramento State opened the event yesterday by falling to Denver, and will conclude the tournament tomorrow against Army at 2 p.m. PDT.

After winning its first two matches of the season, Sacramento State has dropped four straight. Tonight marked the third leg of a season-long 12-match road trip.

Meanwhile, Hawai'i, which is ranked 20th in the nation in the AVCA top 25 poll, improved to 5-0, which includes a four-set victory over Army last night.

The Hornets were playing Hawai'i for just the second time in school history, with the other coming in a four-set Rainbow Wahine win exactly 23 years ago to the day.

Hawai'i hit .345 and had 45 kills compared to Sacramento State's 38 kills and .172 hitting percentage. In addition, the Hornets were limited to just one team block.

For Sacramento State, outside hitter Macey Hayden finished with 12 kills, six digs and a .323 hitting percentage. Rightside hitter Kayla Subbert finished with a season-best 10 kills, outside hitter Sarah Davis had nine kills, and middle blocker Cianna Andrews posted four kills and the Hornets' lone block.

Libero Paige Swinney had a match-high 18 digs, which were seven more than any other player on the floor from either team. Setter McKenna Smith finished with 19 assists, an ace and 10 digs, and Michelle Tanyton posted seven digs.

Four of the Hawai'i starters hit better than .300, including Skyler Williams who had nine kills on nine attempts, good for a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage. Amber Igiede added nine kills without an error and a .562 hitting percentage.
