SACRAMENTO -- UC Davis overcame a 22-21 deficit in the first set, and a 23-22 deficit in the second set, to eventually beat Sacramento State, 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 13-25, 25-14), in a non-conference volleyball matchup between the two rivals.
In the 75th meeting between the two schools, the Aggies came up with seemingly every big point late in both the first two frames. That included finishing the first set on a 4-1 run, and the second set on a 3-0 run to win both highly contested sets. Sacramento State bounced back to easily take the third set, 25-13, but UC Davis jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the fourth and cruised from there to eventually win.
The victory allowed UC Davis to improve to 5-2 on the young season while the Hornets dropped to 3-5. Sacramento State still owns a 52-23 record in the series which dates back to 1976, including a five set win in Davis a year ago.
The Aggies had 22 more digs than the Hornets (83-61), including a healthy amount of one-armed digs throughout the evening. Both teams hit for a similar percentage (UCD .226, SAC .214), and Sacramento State held big advantages in team blocks (12-6) and aces (8-4), but the Aggies came up with the big plays when it was necessary late in the first two frames. UC Davis finished the match by scoring just three more points than the Hornets (88-85) despite the 3-1 outcome.
For Sacramento State, outside hitter Mikaela Nocetti was brilliant, finishing with 22 kills, 10 digs, four blocks and a .317 hitting percentage. The 22 kills were one shy of her career high and the four blocks matched a career best. Fifteen of her 22 kills came during the final two sets.
Middle blocker Lana Brown finished with eight kills, five blocks, zero attack errors and a .471 hitting percentage, and rightside hitter Cianna Andrews added seven kills. Skyler Takeda, who entered the match ranked seventh in the nation in aces per set, will likely move even further up the national leader board as she tacked on four more aces to go with 10 digs. Takeda now has 25 aces this season and is averaging a massive 0.81 aces per set.
Rounding out the four Hornets with double figures in digs were libero Paige Swinney (19) and setter Ashtin Olin (11). Brie Gathright had four blocks, Sarah Davis eight digs, and Macey Hayden had three kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
For UC Davis, Emily Allen had 17 kills, including three straight kills to close the second set after the Aggies trailed, 23-22. Lauren Matias had 16 kills, including the set winner at 24-23 in the first.
The Hornets will play three more times at home this week as the team will host the two-day, four-team Sacramento State Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Hornets open the tournament on Friday against Nevada at 7 p.m. For the tournament schedule and ticket information, please click here for the tournament home page.
