SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State junior Lana Brown was named the Big Sky Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week after helping lead the Hornets to a 3-1 record at last week's season-opening Jack Kaiser Classic in New York.
The middle blocker finished the week with a .490 hitting percentage to go along with averages of 3.29 kills and 1.00 blocks per set. That included 56 kills with just eight errors in 98 swings, and, just as impressively, she had at least 11 kills and hit better than .390 in all four matches. For her efforts, Brown was selected to the all-tournament team.
Today marked the first Big Sky volleyball player of the week award for the 2017 season, and also marked Brown's first career weekly honor.
The Redding, Calif., native had a combined four career starts during her first three active years in the program (one was a medical hardship), but started all four matches during the tournament. She set single-match career highs in kills (19), hitting percentage (.591), blocks (8) and total points (20.5). Brown also posted match highs in hitting percentage in three of the four matches.
In the Hornets' five-set win over UConn, she posted 14 kills, eight blocks and a .591 hitting percentage. During the decisive fifth set, she had two kills, a .500 hitting percentage and two blocks. She followed that performance later in the day with 19 kills, a .485 hitting percentage and three blocks in a four-set loss to tournament host St. John's.
On Saturday, Brown had 11 kills, two blocks and a .391 hitting percentage vs. Holy Cross, and 12 kills, four blocks and a .500 hitting percentage against New Hampshire. Both of those outcomes were four-set victories for the Hornets.
Entering the season, she had totaled 44 kills and 22 blocks during her career in a Hornet uniform. Just last week, in four matches, Brown tallied 56 kills and 17 blocks.
Sacramento State plays four more times this week, including the home opener on Wednesday vs. Pacific at 7 p.m. The team will then travel to Boise for a three-match tournament on Friday and Saturday.
