SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State 10th-year head volleyball coach Ruben Volta announced the program's 2017 indoor schedule today. The schedule includes 32 regular season matches, comprised of 10 at home, 13 on the road, and nine at neutral sites.
The team's season opener will take place on Aug. 25 vs. UConn when the Hornets begin a two-day, four-match tournament in Queens, N.Y. The Hornets will play at four different tournaments during the non-conference portion of the season, including stops in the states of New York, Idaho, Kentucky and Nevada.
After playing UConn, host St. John's, Holy Cross and New Hampshire in New York, the Hornets head back to Colberg Court for their home opener against Pacific on Wednesday, Aug. 30. Sacramento State will then travel to Idaho for a two-day tournament (Sept. 1-2) that includes matchups with Missouri, host Boise State and BYU. The Hornets will play Missouri twice during the preseason, including a match in Nevada during the middle of September.
After a matchup on the road against rival UC Davis on Sept. 5, Sacramento State will make its way to the Bluegrass State for the first time in program history where it will face Bowling Green, host Northern Kentucky and Seattle on Sept. 8-9.
The Hornets will then play their second and final non-conference home match against San Francisco on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Sacramento State wraps up the non-conference portion of the schedule at a three-day tournament in Reno (Sept. 14-16) where the Hornets play host Nevada, Pepperdine and Missouri.
The Hornets, who are the defending Big Sky Conference South Division champions, will play 16 league matches for the fourth straight season. The Big Sky consists of a pair of six-team divisions with each squad playing an unbalanced schedule. Last season, Sacramento State finished with a 13-3 conference record, including a perfect 8-0 mark at home against Big Sky foes.
The Hornets play twice against fellow divisional foes Portland State, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Idaho State and Weber State, and once against the six teams from the other division (Eastern Washington, Idaho, Northern Colorado, Montana, Montana State and North Dakota). A total of eight teams will qualify for the Big Sky Tournament on Nov. 16-18.
The Big Sky opener will take place at home as the Hornets begin the conference season with matches against Weber State (Sept. 21) and Idaho State (Sept. 23). In fact, six of the team's first eight Big Sky matches will take place on the home floor. After the Hornets play on the road at Montana (Sept. 28) and Portland State (Sept. 30), the team will open a season-long four-match homestand that includes dates with North Dakota (Oct. 5), Northern Colorado (Oct. 7), Southern Utah (Oct. 12) and Northern Arizona (Oct. 14).
While the first half of the conference schedule is home friendly, the second half features six of the final eight matches on the road. That includes a four-match trip to Idaho (Oct. 19), Eastern Washington (Oct. 21), Northern Arizona (Oct. 26) and Southern Utah (Oct. 28). The final two home contests will feature Montana State on Nov. 2 and Portland State on Nov. 4.
After the final two regular season matches at Idaho State and Weber State, the Big Sky Tournament will take place Nov. 16-18 at the regular season champion winner's home venue.
The Hornets will return 12 players, including four starters, from last season's team which finished 20-12 overall and 13-3 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State won the conference's South Division, and narrowly missed winning the regular season title and hosting the postseason tournament. North Dakota won the North Division with a 14-2 league record and earned the right to host based on having a better conference record than Sacramento State. The Hornets won nine straight matches until falling in the Big Sky Tournament semifinal round to Northern Arizona.
