SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A large turnout of volleyball alumni, boosters, families and friends to the volleyball team's spaghetti feed fundraiser on Saturday evening helped raise over $15,000 for the program.

All of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Hornets' trip to China which takes place at the end of May/early June. Former longtime Hornet assistant coach and Shanghai native Weidi Zhang will accompany the team on the trip.

Saturday began with the program's annual Alumni Match which saw 15 former Hornets take on the current team. The alumni squad was guided by AVCA Hall of Famer and former Hornet head coach Debby Colberg as well as Zhang. The current version of the Hornets squeaked out the win, defeating the alumni squad, 15-13, in the fifth set.

Later that evening, the program hosted its inaugural spaghetti feed, an event which lasted three hours and saw more than 150 people in attendance. Over 30 former Hornet volleyball players were at the event, and the evening included an auction and a number of raffle prizes.

"I would like to thank everyone, especially the alumni, for coming out and making Saturday's spaghetti feed a great event," Volta said. "We had volleyball alumni from many different eras in attendacne, and the camaraderie they still have with one another was evident and fun to watch.

"When we started planning the event, I had a number in my head of what we'd like to raise, and we exceeded that amount by quite a bit. Having Debby (Colberg) and Weidi (Zhang), the alumni and many of their families, and longtime supporters of the program in attendance, it was a such a great mix of people and a special evening."

Sacramento State opens the 2016 season later this week in Arlington, Texas. The Hornets will play three matches over two days, beginning with a matchup against Arkansas Pine Bluff on Friday at 2 p.m. PDT. Sacramento State finishes the tournament on Saturday with a pair of matches against Sam Houston State at 9 a.m. PDT and host UT Arlington at 5 p.m. PDT.
