SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Fresno State went on a 32-8 run stretching from the middle of the fourth set and through the fifth frame as the Bulldogs defeated the Hornets, 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-3), in the first round of the 12th-annual Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational.

The match was the first of the two-day tournament for the Hornets and served as the team's home opener. Sacramento State (2-3 overall) will play twice tomorrow against both Loyola Marymount (12:30 p.m.) and UC Santa Barbara (7:30 p.m.). After winning two of the first three sets, Sacramento State looked to be in control in the fourth frame after a Fresno State attack error capped a 4-0 run and gave the Hornets an 11-8 run. However, it was all Bulldogs from there. Fresno State (2-2) responded with a 7-0 run and finished the set on a 17-5 run. The Bulldogs then opened the fifth set on a 9-0 run and coasted for the 15-3 win.

The Hornets hit .444 and .372, respectively, in their victorious second and third sets, but hit for negative percentages in the first, fourth and fifth frames. The team combined for 37 kills in the second and third sets, but just 15 kills in the other three frames.

Often times playing with three freshmen and two sophomores on the floor, the Hornets, who have a school-record eight freshmen on the roster, didn't help their cause with 14 service errors. Of the 12 players that appeared in the match for the Hornets, the team used five freshmen, five sophomores and two juniors. Sacramento State hit .171 and saw Fresno State record more kills (63-52), digs (63-42) and blocks (9-7).

Despite the match lasting five sets, only two players from each team finished with double figures in kills. Leading the way for Sacramento State was sophomore Morgan Stanley who finished with 16 kills, six digs and a .300 hitting percentage. Freshman Shannon Boyle added 10 kills and a .296 hitting percentage with eight of those kills coming during the final three sets.

Sophomore Madeline Cannon had eight kills, and freshman Lana Brown tallied six kills and four blocks. Freshman Hannah Meadows posted a team-high nine digs and two aces.

For Fresno State, Zana Bowens had 19 kills in just 37 attacks (.324) while Jaimee-Lee Morrow posted 16 kills and Maci Murdock added eight kills, six blocks and a .375 hitting percentage. Carly Scarbrough posted nine kills, including three during the final set.
