SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State volleyball player Janelle Currey and men's tennis player Aliaksandr Malko were selected as the school's recipients of the Big Sky Conference Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2012-13 academic year.
The scholar-athlete award is given to one male and one female student-athlete from each of the Big Sky's 11 institutions. To qualify for the award, a student-athlete must compete in a Big Sky sanctioned sport, have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2, be a member of the graduating class and/or have completed their last year of intercollegiate athletic eligibility, have completed at least two years of intercollegiate competition at the institution, and be a letterwinner.
Today's award for Currey adds to her already long list of accolades which includes being named the Sacramento State Female Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also the recipient of the Female Hornet Award, given to the student-athlete that best exemplifies the spirit of a Hornet with their sportsmanship, community service and the intangibles that make them a great teammate. A mathematics major, the Rocklin, Calif., native graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 grade point average last month, and is a member of the Pi Mu Epsilon honorary national mathematics society.
A three-time team captain, Currey started every match of her volleyball career, a span of 126 straight starts, the second longest streak in program history. An eight-time all-tournament selection and four-time Big Sky all-academic choice, Currey became the fourth player in school history to record 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs prior to her senior season. Among Sacramento State Div. I era (1991-pres.) career leaders, she ranks fourth in digs (1,662) and attacks (5,029), seventh in kills (1,418), tied for eighth in aces (127), ninth in points (1,657.5) and 10th in digs per set (3.35).
Malko, who is on pace to graduate in the fall with a business degree, has been named to the Dean's Honor List in five of his six semesters at Sacramento State after transferring from South Carolina State. The Minsk, Belarus, native is a two-time all-Big Sky selection and three-time Big Sky all-academic choice. A finalist for this year's Sacramento State Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, Malko has helped lead the men's tennis team to Big Sky Tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances all three years of his career with the squad.
The lone senior on this year's team, Malko went 14-8 as the squad's No. 2 singles player and was the recipient of second team all-conference honors for his efforts. He finished the season on a five-match singles winning streak, which included winning both his matches in the Big Sky Tournament in straight sets. In addition, Malko posted a team-high 19-5 record at No. 1 doubles, including a 9-1 mark against Big Sky competition.
