SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State volleyball team, which returns seven players and two redshirts from last year's squad, will hit the court for its first official practice on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
Fifth-year head coach Ruben Volta will hold practices twice a day from Aug. 8-22, before the team begins the 2012 season at the two-day, three-match Hampton Inn & Suites Invitational in Charleston, S.C. (Aug. 24-25). The Hornets open the tournament against host College of Charleston on Aug. 24, and take on both North Carolina State and Jacksonville on Aug. 25.
Among the squad's three returning starters is team co-captain and fourth-year senior outside hitter Janelle Currey. The local product from Rocklin has started every match of her career (96 straight starts) and has compiled 1,080 kills and 1,305 digs. Junior rightside hitter Kayla Beal and junior setter Hannah Hettinga also return after starting last season.
Other players back for 2012 include team co-captain and senior outside hitter Jessie Genger as well as senior middle blocker Olivia Moss, senior defensive specialist Sydney Kordic and junior setter Katie Aprile. A pair of redshirts also return in sophomore middle blocker Ashley Newcomb and senior setter Alex Diemer.
Last year's team finished 17-15 overall and 10-6 in the Big Sky Conference. That squad finished third in the league standings, the highest for the program since 2007.
After the season-opening tournament in South Carolina, the Hornets return home to host the 10th annual Sacramento State Invitational (Aug. 31-Sept. 1). As part of the two-day, four-team tournament at Colberg Court, the Hornets will play Boise State on the 31st, and both Morgan State and Saint Mary's on the 1st.
