WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO CALIFORNIA IN FIRST ROUND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT

The Hornets made their 11th straight NCAA tourney appearance on Friday at Cal.
BEKERLEY, Calif. - The No. 57 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team lost, 4-0, to No. 9 ranked California in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex. It was the Hornets' 11th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament after taking both the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles.
The Hornets (17-10) end their season with a loss after dropping the doubles point on Friday before and falling in the first three singles matches to finish.
The Golden Bears (18-6), who feature five nationally ranked singles players and two top-15 doubles teams, were simply too much for the Hornets as they move on to the second round of the tournament to face Pepperdine, which upset Purdue in the first round in the morning match at Berkeley, Calif.
Sacramento State, which won its 11th consecutive Big Sky Conference Tournament title to earn the league's bid to the NCAA Tournament, also lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the 11th straight season.
Sacramento State seniors Tatsiana Kapshai, the reigning three-time Big Sky Conference MVP, Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk all played in their final match for the Hornets.
The Hornets return junior Rebeca Delgado to lead the team next season along with sophomores Katharina Knoebl and Sophie Lohscheidt. Freshman Andrea Gomez Carus returns next year as well after gaining valuable experience by playing in the NCAA Tournament this season.
