WOMEN'S TENNIS WRAPS UP FALL TOURNAMENTS AT CAL AND UCLA
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's tennis team had three players wrap up play in fall tournaments on Sunday, with Clarisse Baca's performance at the Cal Nike Invitational highlighting the weekend.
Clarisse Baca advanced to the quarterfinals in singles and the finals in doubles at Cal.
In the Gold Division Singles bracket, No. 8 seeded Baca defeated USC's Alison Ramos, 6-1, 7-5, in the first round and Arizona's Joanna Smith, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round before being knocked off by No. 2 seeded Tayler Davis of California, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
Maria Meliuk played in the same bracket, winning 6-2, 7-6 (5) over Fresno State's Melissa McQueen before dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to California's No. 5 seeded Anett Schutting in the second round.
In the Blue Division Singles bracket, Sophie Lohschiedt lost, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 to San Francisco's Marina Nikolic in the first round.
In doubles play, the No. 2 seeded pairing of Baca and Meliuk won three straight matches to advance to the finals of the Gold Division Doubles bracket before falling in the championship match, 9-7, to California's No. 1 seeded team of Schutting and Jana Juricova. Sophie Lohschiedt and Tatsiana Kapshai won twice before falling in the quarterfinals to Schutting and Juricova, 8-1.
In the 2011 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Rebeca Delgado lost to Vanderbilt's Lauren Mira, 7-6 (4), 7-5, in the opening round of the pre-qualifying draw that was hosted by UCLA.
