SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The No. 39 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team, playing without No. 1 starter Tatsiana Kapshai, defeated Washington State, 4-3, in a thriller at Spare Time Indoor Tennis Club.
The match started with singles play rather than doubles, with the teams playing to a 3-3 draw in six singles matches.
Maria Meliuk and Clarisse Baca fell at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, but Rebeca Delgado earned a win for the Hornets in the top half after a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory at No. 3.
Sophie Lohscheidt won at No. 3 singles over Andjela Kankaras, 7-6, 6-4, but Katharina Knoebl fell at No. 5.
But the match came down to No. 6 singles, the last match to finish. After Washington State's Jessica Gomez rallied to win the second set, Milica Zivanovic came through with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 winner to force doubles play.
The Hornets dominated the doubles portion, winning all three matches to put away the dual by a 4-3 score.
Sacramento State will battle Big Sky Conference foe Montana State and San Francisco on Saturday in a doubleheader.
