NO. 56 WOMEN'S TENNIS EARNS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON OVER PEPPERDINE

Tatsiana Kapshai was victorious at both No. 1 singles and doubles vs. Pepperdine.
LOS ANGELES, Calif.-- The No. 56-ranked Sacramento State women’s tennis team kicked off their season with a 4-2 upset win over No. 43-ranked Pepperdine at the 2011 ITA Kickoff tournament hosted by UCLA at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Sacramento State moves to 1-0 with the victory and will take on the winner of No. 5 UCLA and No. 67 San Diego at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday to earn a berth to compete in the 2011 ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
The Hornets handily captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Junior duo Tatsiana Kapshai and Rebeca Delgado swept past Pepperdine’s Khunpak Issara and Marie Zalameda in an 8-2 win in the No. 1 spot. Fellow juniors Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk clinched the doubles point for Sacramento State with a win at No. 2 after defeating Arianna Colffer and Megan Moore, 8-6.
After the Waves earned the first two singles wins at the No. 3 and No. 2 positions, Kapshai, who is ranked No. 77 in the nation by the ITA, pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Zalameda at No. 1. Baca and senior Milica Zivanovic then earned back-to-back wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions to put the Hornets ahead for good.
After battling through three close sets of 7-5, 3-6, 3-0, freshman Sophie Lohscheidt’s match against Pepperdine’s Andrea Oates at the No. 5 spot was left unfinished after the Hornets clinched the match, 4-2.
