WOMEN'S TENNIS OPENS FALL SEASON

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Sacramento State women’s tennis team opened their fall season this weekend at the Cal Nike Invitational at Berkeley. Nine players participated in the tournament for the Hornets.
Freshman Alina Savchuk earned her first two career singles wins in the Blue consolation round against San Jose State’s Olivia Marshall (6-0, 6-0) and BYU’s Elizaveta Ezhova (6-1, 6-0) before retiring to injury to Fresno State’s Melissa McQueen in the consolation semifinal.
Fellow freshmen Katharina Knoebl and Sophie Lohscheidt also picked up their first collegiate wins during the tournament in other flights. Knoebl defeated Santa Clara’s Elaine Chesoni 6-1, 6-2 in the White singles round of 16, and Knoebl swept past Pacific’s Nikaelli Maciel in a 6-0, 6-1 contest in the consolation round robin bracket.
In Gold singles action, juniors Tatsiana Kapshai and Clarisse Baca advanced to the round of 16 before falling to their respective opponents. Kapshai was defeated by Cal’s Mari Andersson (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) and Baca fell to Saint Mary’s Claire Soper (6-2, 6-0).
In doubles action, Baca and Meliuk defeated doubles teams from Minnesota, San Jose State, and Arizona State to reach the final round of the Blue flight before falling to Long Beach State’s Anais Dallara and Deborah Armstrong in an 8-4 loss. The nationally-ranked No. 43 duo of Kapshai and Rebeca Delgado advanced to the Gold flight semifinals and were defeated by Arizona State’s Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein, 8-2.

Next up for the Hornets will be the Saint Mary’s Invitational on Oct. 8-10 in Moraga before participating in the ITA Northwest Regionals at the end of the month.
