NO. 3 CAL TOO MUCH FOR NO. 59 WOMEN'S TENNIS, HORNETS FALL 6-1

BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 59 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team fell to the No. 3 California Golden Bears by a score of 6-1 on Saturday, Jan. 30.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-1 on the young season, while the Golden Bears improve to 3-0. With the victory, California advances to the field of 16 in the 2010 ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis., Feb. 12-15.

The Golden Bears took home the doubles point, collecting victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles position. Sophomore Clarisse Baca and senior Katrina Zheltova were holding close to the Cal No. 1 duo of Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova, trailing 6-4 when the No. 3 match ended and play was halted.

California clinched the victory by winning the No. 3, 5, and 2 positions in straight sets, but the Hornets hung close in the final three matches to finish. At the No. 4 singles flight, senior Aileen Tsan won the first set 7-5, but eventually fell in the super-tiebreak to California's Kasia Siwosz by a score of 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (10-5).

The No. 1 singles position saw a battle of two All-Americans, who split the first two sets, forcing a third and deciding frame. In the end, the Bears No. 2 ranked Juricova outlasted the Hornets No. 26 ranked Zheltova by a count of 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Sacramento State posted its point in the final singles match to conclude, as junior Milica Zivanovic took down Stephany Chang at the No. 6 singles position, winning in a super-tiebreak by scores of 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9).

The Hornets will return to action on Feb. 5 as they hit the road to take on No. 72 Oregon at 5 p.m.
