SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The No. 53 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team claimed another Big Sky Conference match with a 7-0 decision over Montana, their 69th straight win over a conference foe.
With the victory the Hornets improved to 16-5 and 7-0 in conference action while the Grizzlies fell to 5-9 overall and 4-2 in the Big Sky.
Sacramento State dropped a rare doubles set, but the point had already been won in favor of the Hornets prior to junior Zalina Nazarova and freshman Milica Zivanovic’s tandem 8-6 loss from the No. 3 spot. Sophomore Maria Meliuk and sophomore Clarisse Baca claimed the first doubles set of the afternoon, defeating Amanda Bran and Lauren Gibson efficiently, 8-0 out of the No. 2 position. Shortly after, sophomore Tatsiana Kapshai and freshman Gayane Sarkisian topped Rebecca Bran and Heather Davidson, 8-4, to tally the doubles point in favor of the Hornets.
Baca and Kapshai made quick use of their opponents out of the No. 4 and No. 1 singles spots, respectively, claiming both of those sets 6-0, 6-1, to give the Hornets the early 3-0 lead. The winning decision came down to the third spot, Rebeca Delgado, and she clinched the victory over Rebeca Bran, 6-3, 6-2.
Meliuk followed the victory and added to the Hornets’ lead, when she won the No. 2 singles set over Constance Alexander, 6-4, 6-2 and improved the score to 5-0. The final two sets came down to a tiebreak, as Sarkisian knocked off Lauren Gibson from the No. 6 singles position, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) and tipped the scale, 6-0. Zivanovic completed the singles sweep, claiming a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) victory over Amanda Bran.
The Hornets next return to action on April 16, when they take on Arizona in nonconference action in Tucson, Ariz.
