NO. 49 WOMEN'S TENNIS TAKES DOWN WASHINGTON STATE 5-2

PULLMAN, Wash. - The No. 49 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis bounced back from a loss on Saturday to post a 5-2 victory over Washington State on Sunday, Feb. 21.

With the victory, the Hornets improve to 5-3, and remain undefeated against teams ranked outside of the top 20. The Cougars fell to 6-3.

Sacramento State swept the doubles point, defeating the Cougars in rank order. The Hornets No. 1 tandem of sophomore Clarisse Baca and senior Katrina Zheltova dispatched Andjela Kankaras and Liudmila Vasilieva by a margin of 8-4. The No. 2 pairing of freshman Rebeca Delgado and sophomore Tatsiana Kapshai clinched the point for the Hornets with an 8-3 victory over Elisabeth Fournier and Lea Jansen. Doubles play concluded with sophomore Maria Meliuk and senior Aileen Tsan posting an 8-4 triumph over Ksenia Googe and Marina Nicolas.

At the start of singles play, Washington State tied the match at 1-1, as Fournier defeated Meliuk at No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The Hornets responded with victories in the next three matches to finish to clinch the match. Delgado rebounded from a tough loss on Saturday against Washington to defeat Nicolas in short order at the No. 4 position, 6-1, 6-4. Zheltova, the No. 46 ranked player in the nation, then improved her record against nationally ranked competition to 3-2 on the season with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 61 Vasilieva at the No. 1 position.

Tsan then clinched the match for the Hornets at No. 6, collecting a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jansen. Kapshai increased the lead to 5-1 after posting a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Googe at No.3 singles, but the Cougars took the final match to finish, No. 5 singles, as Kankaras defeated Baca 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).

With their victories today, Kapshai, Tsan and Zheltova each have three match winning streaks in singles competition.

Sacramento State returns to action at home on Tue., Feb. 23 as they host Hawai'i in a match that was rescheduled from earlier this season. First serve of doubles action is set for 2:30 p.m.
