NO. 59 WOMEN'S TENNIS TAKES DOWN NO. 72 OREGON 4-3

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 59 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team defeated the No. 72 ranked Oregon Ducks by a score of 4-3 on Friday, Feb. 5 at the Student Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Hornets improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Ducks fall to 3-1.
The Hornets took home the doubles point to start the match, taking home victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. No. 2 doubles was first to finish, as freshman Rebeca Delgado and sophomore Tatsiana Kapshai collected an 8-3 victory over Sabine Fuchs and Julia Metzger. Sophomore Maria Meliuk and senior Aileen Tsan then clinched the point at No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 victory over Emmanuelle Cor and Patricia Skowronski. In the final match to finish, sophomore Clarisse Baca and senior Katrina Zheltova posted an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles over Trudie du Toit and Pavlina Smatova, giving the Hornets a sweep of the doubles competition.
Zheltova started the Hornets down the right path in singles play, as she defeated Smatova 6-4, 6-2 in the first match to finish, No. 1 singles, giving Sacramento State a 2-0 lead in the match. After Metzger defeated Meliuk 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 position to pull the Ducks to within one at 2-1, Delgado knocked off Cor in straight sets at the No.4 position 6-4, 6-3 to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead.
Oregon was not to be outdone, however, as they took the No. 6 and No. 5 positions in succession, tying the score at 3-3 with only No. 3 singles left on the court. But in the No. 3 flight, Kapshai was able to hold off du Toit, defeating the Duck 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 to give the Hornets the 4-0 victory.
Sacramento State will take on Nevada in a neutral site game in Eugene on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m.
