BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 42 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 7 Cal on Friday, March 6 at Hellman Tennis Complex.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 7-4 on the season, while the Bears improve to 8-1.
Sacramento State, who has been bitten by the injury bug as of late, welcomed the return of freshman Maria Meliuk, who had missed the previous three matches due to illness. Once again, however, the Hornets played without junior All-American Katrina Zheltova, who has now missed five straight matches. Senior Joyce Martinez Gutierrez also did not participate for the first time this season for the Hornets, missing the match due to injury.
The Bears swept all three doubles matches, marking the first time all season that the Hornets had lost each of the doubles contests. The closest Sacramento State would come would be the No. 3 position, where redshirt freshman Clarisse Baca and senior Luba Schifris fell to Stephany Chang and Marion Ravelojaona of Cal 8-4.
On the singles side of the ledger, sophomore Melissa Valenzuela provided the Hornets their best chance for a point on the day before falling to Ravelojaona at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 in the final match to finish on the day.
Meliuk, who had earned two Big Sky Player of the Week awards earlier this season before missing last weekend's action, fell for just the second time this season, losing to Mari Anderson at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
The Hornets return home to face Montana State in Big Sky action on Sunday, March 8 at 9 a.m. The match has been moved indoors, and will now take place at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center, which is located at 11205 Pyrites Way in Gold River, Calif.
