SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Sacramento State women’s tennis team was defeated by the San Diego Toreros by a score of 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 7-2 on the season, while the Toreros improve to 5-0.
For the second straight match, the Hornets played without 2008 All American, junior Katrina Zheltova, and No. 2 singles player, freshman Maria Meliuk. Seniors Luba Schifris and Joyce Martinez Gutierrez were forced to retire before the completion of their singles matches as well for the injured plagued Hornets,
Sacramento State dropped the doubles point for the first time this year, with Martinez Gutierrez and redshirt freshman Clarisse Baca posting an 8-7 (7-3) tiebreak victory at No. 3 doubles to improve to 9-0 on the season.
The Hornets then dropped all six singles matches to fall to the Toreros. Martinez Gutierrez was forced to retire at No. 4 singles for the second straight match, this time lasting just one point before succumbing to the pain of an injured elbow. Schifris was forced to retire as well, in the second set where she was trailing Juliette Coupez 7-6, 4-1 at No. 1 singles.
Next to finish, Baca fell to Tammy Kevey at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3, which was followed by sophomore Melissa Valenzuela falling to Alexandra Demidova at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Milica Zivanovic then fell to Maria Raygada at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 7-5, with the last match to finish coming at No. 2 singles, where junior Aileen Tsan lost to Maja Sujica 6-1, 6-2.
The Hornets close out their Southern California road trip on Sunday with a date against No. 62 San Diego State. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
