STRONG START CONTINUES AS WOMEN'S TENNIS ROLLS OVER WASHINGTON STATE 6-1

PULLMAN, Wash. - The No. 45 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season following a 6-1 victory over No. 59 Washington State (2-5).
The Hornets started the match off on the right foot, sweeping all three doubles matches to take home the doubles point. The tandem of freshman Maria Meliuk and junior Aileen Tsan struck first, defeating Marina Nicolas and Aleksandra Cekic at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, Redshirt freshman Clarisse Baca and senior Joyce Martinez Gutierrez, the No. 4 ranked doubles team in the Northwest region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, made quick work of Jessica Gomez and Livia Gherman at No. 3 doubles, 8-1, to secure the point. Junior Katrina Zheltova and sophomore Melissa Valenzuela completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory over Elisabeth Fournier and Ioana Oprea at No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, Meliuk gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Oprea at No. 3 singles, and the lead extended to 3-0 when senior Luba Schifris took care of Marina Nicolas at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4. The Cougars pulled the match back to 3-1 after Cekic took down Tsan at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, but the Hornets were able to clinch the victory at No. 1 singles, with Zheltova, the No. 58 ranked player in the country, taking home a hard fought 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Fournier.
Baca then defeated Gomez at the No. 5 position 6-3, 6-3, and Martinez followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gherman at No. 6 singles to give the Hornets the 6-1 victory.
Sacramento State returns to action on Sunday, February 8 as they travel to Eastern Washington to open up Big Sky Conference play.
