WOMEN’S TENNIS WRAPS UP PLAY AT THE ITA NORTHWEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

STANFORD, Calif. -- Highlighted by junior Katrina Zheltova reaching the singles quarterfinal round, the Sacramento State women’s tennis team wrapped up play today at the ITA Northwest Women’s Tennis Regional Championships at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

A total of eight Hornets competed at the event in both singles and doubles action from Oct. 17-19. The event showcased the top 128 players from the following Northwest region schools – Stanford (host), Cal, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Nevada, Oregon, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, UC Davis, Washington and Washington State.

Zheltova, who is the two-time Big Sky Conference MVP, won her first three matches in straight sets before falling in the quarterfinal round today to Cal’s Bojana Bobusic, 6-1, 6-4. Zheltova, who received a bye in the first round, had dropped a combined 10 games during her three victories prior to today’s loss. In addition, Hornet junior Aileen Tsan won her first two matches in straight sets before falling in the round of 32 to Stanford’s Hilary Barte.

In doubles play, the tandem of freshman Clarisse Baca and senior Joyce Martinez Gutierrez won their first three matches before falling in today’s quarterfinal round to Fresno State’s Tinesta Rowe and Melanie Gloria, 8-6. Zheltova teamed with sophomore Melissa Valenzuela to win their first two doubles matches before losing to a team from Cal Poly in the round of 16.

A complete recap of each of Sacramento State’s singles and doubles matches from the tournament can be found below. Only one match was played in the consolation singles draw regardless of the outcome.
