WOMEN'S TENNIS COMPLETES PLAY AT SAINT MARY'S INVITATIONAL

MORAGA, Calif. – A trio of Hornet newcomers competed at the Saint Mary’s Invitational, which took place Oct. 10-12 at Saint Mary’s College and Moraga Country Club.
In singles competition, freshman Gayane Sarkisian fared well, reaching the quarterfinals of the white singles draw. Sarkisian defeated Emma Shapiro of UC Davis in the round of 32 (6-4, 6-3), and followed that win with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Anna Gullikson of Portland in the round of 16. Ashley Pane of Santa Clara finally ended her tournament in the quarterfinal round, defeated Sarkisian 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Redshirt freshman Clarisse Baca played in the top draw, red singles, but fell to Sabina Gunnarson of Saint Mary’s 7-5, 6-1 in the round of 32. Baca then entered the consolation draw of red singles, defeating Stephanie Fuchs of Portland 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 16 before falling to Caroline Stevens of Nevada in the consolation quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-3.
Baca and Sarkisian also teamed for a deep run in the top doubles draw, red doubles, making it all the way to the semifinal round. The freshmen tandem took down the duo of Courtney Clayton and Jen Yen of Stanford in the round of 16, 8-4, and followed up the victory with another 8-4 triumph, this time over Aleksandra Malovic and Vanja Radunovic of Washington. This set the stage for the semifinal round, where Baca and Sarkisian fell to the No. 1 seeded team of Jana Juricova and Rachael Dillion of Cal in a close match, 9-7.
In the only other Hornet action in the tournament, sophomore Milica Zivanovic fell to Svenja Arens of Pacific in the round of 32 in white singles, 6-0, 6-2. Zivanovic later advanced to the consolation quarterfinals, where she fell to Silvana Dukic of San Jose State in a match that went to a super tiebreak, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 1-0 (10-5).
The Hornets will take part in their final tournament of the fall season when they travel to Stanford, Calif. for the ITA Northwest Regionals from Oct. 17-20.
