AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 42 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team fell to No. 17 Texas by a score of 6-1 on Saturday, March 22 at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center,
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 11-4 on the season, while the Longhorns improve to 8-3.
Texas started the day by winning the doubles point, as they won all three matches. The closest doubles encounter took place at No. 3 doubles, where junior Joyce Martinez Gutierrez and freshman Melissa Valenzuela came close, but eventually fell to Stephanie Davison and Caroline Larsson of UT 8-6.
Texas took home the first two matches to finish in singles, the No. 1 and No. 6 positions, before Sacramento State provided a point. Junior Karina Jarlkaganova took down Maggie Mello at No. 4 singles 7-6 (2), 6-4, pulling the match to 3-1. The Longhorns would get the clincher, however, with a win at No. 5 singles. The final two matches to finish went into the super tiebreak, and the Hornets fell in heartbreaker fashion in each. At No. 3 singles, junior Luba Schifris dropped a 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 decision to Davison, after Davison won the super tiebreak 16-14. Junior Anastassia Lyssenko also brought her match at No. 2 singles to the super tiebreak, falling to Courtney Zauft 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
The Hornets again played without the nation's No. 41 ranked singles player, junior Katrina Zheltova, who is out due to injury.
Sacramento State returns home for a pair of Big Sky Conference clashes on Thursday, as they host Eastern Washington at 1:30 p.m. and Idaho State at 6 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
