MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 57 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team fell to the No. 17 ranked Pepperdine Waves, 7-0, on Sunday, Feb. 10 at the Ralphs-Strauss Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 4-1 on the season, while the Waves improve to 3-2.
Pepperdine started strong, winning the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to stake claim to the doubles point. No. 2 doubles, however, was a different matter, as the No. 35 ranked Pepperdine tandem of Anamika Bhargava and Anete Bandere had their hands full with junior Anastassia Lyssenko and sophomore Aileen Tsan, before rebounding for a 8-7, (10-8) victory.
On the singles side of the ledger, the Waves swept all six points, but several matches were very close. Sophomore Katrina Zheltova, ranked No. 66 nationally, had a tough match against a fellow ranked singles competitor, falling to No. 99 ranked Sylvia Kosakowski, 6-4, 7-5. Another tough battle occured at No. 6 singles, as junior Joyce Martinez Gutierrez had a strong showing before falling in the super tiebreak to Tania Rice, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
The Hornets will look to rebound as they travel to Flagstaff, Ariz. on Feb. 15 to open up Big Sky Conference play, as they face Northern Arizona at 10 a.m. That match will be followed the next day with a clash against Arizona, on Feb. 16, also at 10 a.m.
