WOMEN'S TENNIS POSTS VICTORIES OVER UC SANTA BARBARA AND UC DAVIS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's tennis team was victorious in two matches on the day, as they defeated UC Santa Barbara 6-1 and UC Davis 5-2 at Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center on Sat., Feb. 2.
With the wins, the No. 56 ranked Hornets improve to 3-0, while the Gauchos fall to 0-1 and the Aggies fall to 0-3.
UCSB started off the first match of the day strong, as they were victorious in all doubles matches by a score of 8-6. The Hornets rebounded to sweep the six singles points to pick up the victory. Sophomore Katrina Zheltova, ranked No. 63 nationally, picked up her first dual match victory of the season at No. 1 singles, defeating Marta Simic 6-1, 6-1. Junior Luba Schifris was also victorious in her first dual of the season, picking up a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Asagi Onaga at the No. 4 singles position.
After not winning a doubles affair against the Gauchos, the Hornets came back to sweep the doubles point against UC Davis in the second match of the day, led by an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 position by Zheltova and Schifris.
On the singles side of the ledger, the Hornets took four of six available points, taking home victories at No. 1, No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6, with juniors Karina Jarlkaganova and Joyce Martinez Gutierrez sweeping their respective matches 6-0, 6-0. Both the No. 2 and No. 3 matches came down to the super tiebreak, where freshman Melissa Valenzuela was able to hold off Robin Guier 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8), while junior Anastassia Lyssenko fell to Desiree Stone of the Aggies 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7).
The Hornets picked up five points in the Causeway Cup standings with the victory over Davis, and return to action at Loyola Marymount on Friday, Feb. 8 at 1:30 p.m.
