WOMEN'S TENNIS COMPLETES PLAY AT THE ITA NORTHWEST FALL REGIONAL

STANFORD, Calif. – Katrina Zheltova marched into the round of 16, as did three Hornet doubles tandems, to pace Sacramento State at the ITA Northwest Fall Regional Championships, held Oct. 19-22 on the campus of Stanford University.
Zheltova, who was seeded eighth in the tournament, ran smoothly through her first two round before falling to 10th seeded Cristina Visico of Cal, 6-2, 6-3. Anastassia Lyssenko, Karina Jarlkaganova and Aileen Tsan each posted first round victories, advancing to the round of 64 before tasting defeat.
In doubles action, the Hornets had three duos reach the round of 16 before falling to seeded opponents. The doubles team of Joyce Martinez Gutierrez and Melissa Valenzuela posted 8-0 and 8-2 victories in the first two rounds before falling to second seeded Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong, 8-5.
After receiving a first round bye, the team of Luba Schifris and Zheltova tallied a hard-fought 9-8 (4) victory over Bobbie Englert and Daron Moore of Cal, before falling to seventh seeded Caroline Bailly and Maria Mizyuk of Nevada 8-5. The tandem of Lyssenko and Tsan posted 8-3 and 8-1 victories before falling to fifth seeded Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano of Cal, 8-3.
The tournament finished the fall portion of the Hornets schedule, as they will return to action on Jan. 15-17 at the Hawai'i Spring Invitational, before facing Washington in Hawaii in their first dual match of the season on Jan. 19.
