WOMEN'S TENNIS WRAPS UP PLAY AT CAL NIKE INVITATIONAL

BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior Joyce Martinez Gutierrez and freshman Melissa Valenzuela teamed up to win the consolation bracket of the blue doubles at the Cal Nike Invitational, held last weekend (Sept. 28-30) in Berkeley, Calif.
After falling in the round of 16 of the main draw to eventual winners Maria Mosolova and Nazlie Ghazal of Northwestern 8-3, Martinez Gutierrez and Valenzula ran off three straight victories in the consolation bracket, culminating in an 8-6 defeat of Bruna Paes and Elizabeth McFeeters of Fresno State.
In singles action, both Martinez Gutierrez and junior Karina Jarlkaganova advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket in the blue singles before falling.
The tournament consisted of players from Arizona, Arizona State, host Cal, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Nevada, Northwestern, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara.
