WOMEN’S TENNIS COMPETES AT BULLDOG CLASSIC, ZHELTOVA REACHES SEMIS

FRESNO, Calif. - Sacramento State sophomore Katrina Zheltova reached the semis of the singles draw, and teamed with junior Luba Schifris to reach the semis of the doubles draw at last weekend’s Bulldog Tennis Classic (Sept. 21-23) at the Wathen Tennis Center.

Zheltova, who was playing all weekend with an ankle injury, won each of her first three singles matches of the tournament before falling to Fresno Pacific’s Anna Karavayeva in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Karavayeva then fell to eventual singles champion Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State. Karavayeva spent her freshman season at Sacramento State in 2005 before transferring to Fresno Pacific.

Zheltova, who was named last season’s Big Sky Conference MVP, also teamed with Schifris to win their first two matches after receiving a first-round bye. However, the duo was eventually defeated by Fresno State’s Danon Beatty/Vanessa Heroux in the semis, 8-5.

Seven Sacramento State players competed in the tournament, including Zheltova, Schifris, juniors Karina Jarlkaganova, Anastassia Lyssenko and Joyce Martinez Gutierrez, sophomore Aileen Tsan and newcomer Melissa Valenzuela. Players from Arizona, Fresno Pacific, Fresno State, Pacific, Nevada, Sacramento State, San Jose State and Santa Clara attended the event.
