With the win, the Hornets improved to 13-6 overall, and 6-0 at home. In fact, Sacramento State has outscored its opponents, 39-3, on its home courts this season. The team has won five of its last seven, and has just two more regular season tuneups before the Big Sky Tournament takes place on April 27-29 in Sacramento.
With the loss, Pacific dropped to 6-11.
The Hornets swept all three doubles matches with the tandems of No. 1 Zheltova/Schifris, No. 2 Lyssenko/Aileen Tsan and No. 3 Martinez/Karina Jarlkaganova each posting victories.
In singles play, Zheltova (No. 1; 6-1, 6-4), Lyssenko (No. 2; 6-3, 6-1), Schifris (No. 4; 6-2, 6-1), Martinez (No. 5; 6-2, 6-2) and Helland (No. 6; 6-1, 6-1) each won with relative ease. Tsan, who was playing at No. 3, was losing to Pacific’s Svenja Arens, 6-2, 5-2, before retiring due to illness.
The Hornets return to action next Saturday, April 14, when they play a rare road Big Sky Conference doubleheader at Weber state (9 a.m.) and Idaho State (3 p.m.). After the team’s morning match at Weber State, the Hornets will hop in a van and drive two hours to Pocatello for the 3 p.m. match against Idaho State.
