WOMEN’S TENNIS SPLITS PAIR OF MATCHES ON SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State women’s tennis team defeated San Diego on Saturday before falling at UC Irvine on Sunday. The Hornets, who are ranked 56th in the nation, are now 6-3 overall.
On Saturday, Sacramento State dominated play against San Diego. The Hornets began by taking two of the three doubles matches and then won five of six singles matches for the 6-1 victory. Freshman Katrina Zheltova continued to crush the opposition with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Helen Lindstrand to extend her winning streak to seven straight matches. Zheltova also teamed with Luba Schifris for an 8-4 win over Sophia Vogt and Zoe Taylor in the No. 1 doubles match.
In singles play, the Hornets also received win from Schifris at No. 3, Aileen Tsan at No. 4, Joyce Martinez Gutierrez at No. 5 and Cecilia Helland at No. 6. Each of Sacramento State’s victories came in straight sets against the Toreros.
On Sunday, 43rd-ranked UC Irvine (10-2) snapped Sacramento State’s winning streak at three straight matches with a 5-2 win. After dropping the doubles point, the Anteaters won five of six singles matches, including a pair of three-set victories, to secure the win.
The Hornets took the early lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. Zheltova and Schifris defeated Becky Bernhard and Clare Fermin, 8-6, at No. 1 and Tsan and Anastassia Lyssenko beat Ali Borowicz and Jayme Hu, 8-4, at No. 3.
Bernhard and Fermin, however, got revenge in the singles matches as both rallied for victories. Bernhard defeated Zheltova, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2, to hand the freshman her first loss since the season opener against Cal. Fermin downed Tsan, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, for a win at No. 3.
Sacramento State’s lone singles victory was by Cecilia Helland at No. 5. Helland defeated Jessica Boradfoot, 7-6, 6-0.
The Hornets will next be in action on March 3 against Northern Arizona at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
