EUGENE, Ore. — The Sacramento State women’s tennis team capped a successful trip through the Pacific Northwest with a 4-3 win over No. 39 Oregon on Sunday.
The win improved the Hornets, who are ranked 63rd, to 2-1 on the season while the Ducks dropped to 4-2.
After dropping the doubles point, Sacramento State took a 3-1 lead early in singles play. Freshman Katrina Zheltova blanked Dominika Dieskova, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 for the team’s first point.
Cecilia Helland also did her part at the bottom of the lineup with a 7-5, 6-2, win over Claudia Hirt at No. 6. Sacramento State continued its momentum with another straight-sets win at No. 2 where Anastassia Lyssenko defeated Ana Cecilia Olivos, 7-5, 6-3.
Oregon was able to stay alive when Monica Hoz de Vila defeated Joyce Martinez Gutierrez, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to make the score, 3-2. However, the Hornets clinched the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, win from Luba Schifris over Anna Powaska at No. 4.
The final singles match came at No. 3 where Oregon’s Carmen Seremeta outlasted Aileen Tsan, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
The Ducks looked to be in control from the start, winning all three doubles matches. Seremeta and Hirt cruised past Helland and Zheltova, 8-2, at No. 2 and Powaska and Hoz de Vila defeated the team of Tsan/Lyssenko, 8-6, at No. 3 to secure the point. Dieskova and Olivos also recorded an 8-7 win over Martinez and Schifris at No. 1.
Sacramento State will next be in action on Thursday, Feb. 8, when it travels to No. 1-ranked Stanford.
