WOMEN’S TENNIS IMPROVES TO 1-1 WITH VICTORY AT WASHINGTON
2/3/2007
SEATTLE -- Sacramento State won the doubles points and received singles victories from freshman Katrina Zheltova, sophomore Luba Schifris and senior Cecilia Helland as the Hornets knocked off Washington, 4-3, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Since moving to the Div. I ranks, the Hornets had been 1-6 against Washington prior to today’s victory. The Hornets, who return to action tomorrow against Oregon in Eugene, improved to 1-1. Sacramento State was playing without the services of No. 2 singles player Katrina Bandere because of injury.
With the loss, Washington dropped to 0-3 as today’s match served as the Huskies’ home opener.
The Hornets won two of the three doubles matches to pick up what turned out to be a huge doubles point. The tandems of Zheltova and Helland (No. 2), and Lyssenko and Aileen Tsan (No. 3) each posted victories.
Sacramento State then picked up three straight singles wins by Helland at No. 6 (6-0, 6-1), Zheltova at No. 1 (6-4, 6-1), and Schifris at No. 4 (6-4, 6-2). The Hornets had a 4-0 lead and the victory had already been clinched before the team’s final three singles players (No. 2 Anastassia Lyssenko, No. 3 Tsan and No. 5 Joyce Martinez Gutierrez) each lost their matches. Both Lyssenko and Tsan split their first two sets before losing the match in super tiebreakers.
The Hornets, who are currently ranked 63rd in the nation, open the year with six consecutive matches on the road and do not play their home opener until Feb. 17 against Big Sky Conference foe Montana State.
