BERKELEY, Calif. — The Sacramento State women’s team was swept by 11th-ranked Cal, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center. The match was the first for both teams this season.
The Golden Bears had little trouble with the 63rd-ranked Hornets, winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets. The closest battle of the day came at No. 1 where Susie Babos needed a super tie-break to defeat Hornet freshman Katrina Zheltova, 6-2, 4-6 (10-7). Babos entered the match ranked third in the latest rankings while Zheltova was competing for the first time for Sacramento State.
Sacramento State managed to win just 13 games in the remaining five matches. Zsuzsanna Fodor defeated freshman Katrina Bandere, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2. Freshman Nina Henkel, who is ranked 14th, beat freshman Aileen Tsan, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. At No. 4, Stephanie Kusano bettered Luba Schifris, 6-2, 6-1. Cristina Visico managed a 6-2, 6-0, win over Joyce Martinez Gutierrez, 6-2, 6-0. Bojana Bobusic closed out singles play with a 6-3, 6-1, win over Cecilia Helland at No. 6.
The Hornets did manage to win one of the three doubles matches but dropped the other two en route to losing the point. The team of Tsan and Anastassia Lyssenko defeated Bobusic and Claire Ilcinkas, 8-2, at No. 3 for the Sacramento State win. The second ranked team of Babos and Fodor downed Zheltova and Bandere, 8-4, at No. 1 and Henkel and Daron Moore, who are ranked 12th, teamed to beat Schifris and Martinez, 8-3, at No. 2.
