SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State women's tennis team completed play at the Maui Invitational last weekend. The Hornets closed the tournament strongly, winning seven singles matches over the final two days.
The tournament began with two singles flights but later changed to a round-robin format. In the singles flight 1, Katrina Bandere and Joyce Martinez Gutierrez were both defeated in the semifnals. Bandere was bettered by eventual champion Mathhilde Cor of Washington, 6-3, 6-3. Martinez fell to Washington's Tara Simpson, 7-5, 6-2.
Once out of bracket play, Sacramento State would lose only one other singles match. On Saturday, Karina Jarlkaganova started the run with a 6-3, 6-0, win over Hawaii's Kana Aikewa. Bandere defeated Samantha Cappella of UH, 6-1, 6-0, Aileen Tsan bettered UH's Julia Sandborn, 6-2, 6-1, and Cecilia Helland beat Cecilia Bihag, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
On Sunday, Jarlkaganova, Tsan and Helland all chalked up wins. Jarlkaganova defeated Sandborn, 6-1, 6-0. Tsan beat Cappella, 6-1, 6-2, and Helland recorded a 6-1, 6-1, win over Florence Wasko, 6-1, 6-1. The lone blemish on Sunday came when Bandere was toppled by Aikawa, 6-3, 6-1.
The Hornets also earned a pair of doubles wins over the final two days. The team of Helland and Jarlkaganova faced off against Wasko and Bihag on both days. On Saturday, Sacramento State claimed an 8-1 victory. The pair were pushed harder on Sunday before winning, 9-7.
