WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS IN FIRST ROUND NCAA TOURNAMENT MATCHUP TO USC
BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 55 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to the No. 20 ranked USC Women of Troy by a score of 4-0 on Friday, May 14.
With the loss, the Hornets end their season with a record of 19-7, while USC improves to 14-9 and will take on the winner of the matchup between Cal and Southern University on Saturday, May 15 in second round action.
The Hornets hung tight in doubles competition, as at the No. 1 position freshman Rebeca Delgado and sophomore Tatsiana Kapshai were trailing 6-5 to the No. 64 ranked tandem of Danielle Lao and Maria Sanchez when the doubles point was decided. The first doubles match to finish, the No. 2 position, saw the USC duo of Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos defeat sophomores Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk by a score of 8-2. In the second match to be completed, senior Aileen Tsan and junior Milica Zivanovic, the lone upperclassmen on the Hornet squad, fell to Sarah Fansler and Lyndsay Kinstler at No. 3 doubles to clinch the Women of Troy the doubles point.
In singles action, the final three matches in the rank order were won by the Trojans to clinch the victory. The first match to finish saw Fansler of the Women of Troy defeat Tsan 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 singles position. At the No. 6 position, Christala Andrews took down Hornet freshman Zalina Nazarova by a score of 6-3, 6-0, and at the No. 4 position, Baca fought hard before falling to No. 112 ranked Pulido by a score of 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the match for USC.
The top half of the singles lineup remained unfinished, but the Hornets were close in two of the three matches. At No. 1 singles, Kapshai was tied at 3-3 in the second set to No. 3 Maria Sanchez after dropping the first set 6-2 when the match was called. Delgado fell in a tight first set to No. 31 ranked Ramos 7-5, and trailed 4-2 in set two when the match ended. In No. 3 play, Meliuk was defeated in set one by a tally of 6-4 by No. 37 ranked Lao, and was behind in set two 4-0 when play was called.
Four Hornets earned all-Big Sky Conference honors this season under the leadership of Big Sky Coach of the Year Dima Hrynashka, with sophomore Tatsiana Kapshai earning Big Sky MVP honors. Sophomore Maria Meliuk was a first team selection for the second straight year, while sophomore Clarisse Baca and freshman Rebeca Delgado earned the honor for the first time. Hrynashka led the Hornets to their ninth straight conference title during the spring of 2010, and increased their Big Sky winning streak to 72 straight matches.
