BACA PEGGED AS BIG SKY PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SECOND TIME THIS SEASON
OGDEN, Utah - Sacramento State sophomore women's tennis player Clarisse Baca was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for the week of April 14-22.
A native of Chihuahua, Mexico, Baca posted a 2-0 record in singles play and a 2-0 record in doubles play as the Hornets split on the week, losing to No. 55 Arizona 4-3 before defeating Northern Arizona 6-1 to clinch the Big Sky regular season title and No. 1 overall seed in the Big Sky Tournament.
Baca posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Natalia Toporowska of Arizona on Friday at No. 4 singles, and followed it up with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Yumi Hasegawa also at the No. 4 position. The sophomore posted a pair of doubles victories with partner Maria Meliuk, including a 8-2 triumph at No. 2 doubles against Arizona, and a 8-5 decision at the No. 2 position against NAU.
She has won 10 straight singles matches, and is also holding a five match winning streak with partner Meliuk in doubles action entering the Big Sky Tournament. Baca was honored by the conference for the second time in her career, both of which have occured this season.
Sacramento State will look for its ninth straight Big Sky Tournament championship as they host the festivities at Gold River Racquet club on April 24-25. The top seeded Hornets will take on the No. 4 seed Montana State on Saturday at 10 a.m., and with a victory would face the winner of the match between No. 2 Northern Arizona and No. 3 Montana for the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at 10 a.m.
