3/19/2010
BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 45 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team had a chance to avenge a previous loss to No. 9 California, but fell to the Golden Bears by a score of 6-1 on Friday, March 19 at Hellman Tennis Complex.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 9-5, while the Golden Bears improve to 11-3.
After Cal swept the doubles points to take a 1-0 lead, the Hornets picked up a point in singles play and almost pulled off a major upset at the No. 1 singles position. A No. 4 singles, sophomore Clarisse Baca defeated Kasia Siwosz in a wild match that saw Baca take the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5) before losing 6-0 in set number two. Baca took home the third set super tiebreak to put the Hornets on the scoreboard.
The final match to finish was No. 1 singles, as Jana Juricova, the No. 2 ranked player in the nation, was taken to the limit by Hornet sophomore Tatsiana Kapshai. Juricova defeated Kapshai 6-0 in the opening set, but the native of Minsk, Belarus fought back to take the second set 6-4. The Golden Bear sophomore was too much in the end, taking home the third set by a score of 6-4.
The two teams had met previously in the spring in the finals of the ITA Kickoff Regional, with California also winning by a margin of 6-1. Sacramento State again played without the services of senior Katrina Zheltova.
Sacramento State continues a weekend road swing with matches at Northern Colorado and at Montana State in Big Sky play on Saturday and Sunday.
