WOMEN’S TENNIS COMPLETES PLAY AT ITA NORTHWEST REGIONALS; ZHELTOVA FALLS IN SEMIFINAL

STANFORD, Calif. - Sacramento State senior Katrina Zheltova led the way for the Hornets at the ITA Northwest Women’s Tennis Regionals, advancing to the semifinals before being knocked off by the number one overall seed.
After receiving a bye in the round of 128, Zheltova, who was seed eighth, began her march toward the finals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Julie Metzger of Oregon in the round of 64. In the round of 32, Zheltova was victorious over Pacific’s Christina Goehl, 6-4, 6-1, before posting a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over 10th seeded Lindsay Burdette of Stanford in the round of 16.
In the quarterfinals, Zheltova took down third seeded Venise Chan of Washington in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, setting her up for a semifinal showdown with top seeded Jana Juricova of Cal. Juricova ended the Hornet seniors run, however, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Zheltova wasn’t the only Hornet to advance deep into the tournament, as fellow senior Tsan advanced to the round of 32, after taking down Trudie du Toit of Oregon in the round of 64, 6-3, 6-2. But Tsan fell to Chan of Washington, who Zheltova later defeated, 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 32.
In doubles action, two of the Hornets three entries reached the round of 32 with first round victories. The team of Baca and Zheltova defeated Eades and Rouhafza of UC Davis, 8-1, before falling to Li and McVeigh of Stanford, also by a score of 8-1. The tandem of Meliuk and Tsan defeated Brady and Curry of UC Davis by a score of 8-7, before dropping an 8-4 decision to the seventh seeded duo of Burdette and Tan of Stanford in the round of 32.

The Hornets open up their spring schedule with a January 28 encounter with Hawai’i. First serve of doubles is set for 2:30 p.m. from Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
