WOMEN’S TENNIS TAKES HOME PAIR OF CONSOLATION CROWNS AT SAINT MARY’S INVITATIONAL 10/19/2009 MORAGA, Calif. - The Sacramento State women’s tennis team had four players take part in the Saint Mary’s Invitational, and took home a pair of consolation titles. In the top “red” doubles bracket, the tandem of sophomore Maria Meliuk and senior Aileen Tsan took home the consolation title with an 8-3 victory over Lacey Pflibsen and Megan Sporndli of Portland. They advanced to the finals of the bracket after defeating Laura Pola and Melissa McQueen of Fresno State (8-2) in the quarterfinals and Danielle Farmer and Rika Mehndiratta of Gonzaga (8-6) in the semifinals. The duo of sophomore Clarisse Baca and freshman Zalina Nazarova also took home a title, winning the consolation bracket of the “white” doubles draw by defeating Claire Dodge and Kristina Zauere of Gonzaga, 8-5. On their way to the consolation final, the pair defeated Noelle Eades and Shawdee Rouhafza of UC Davis (8-3) and fourth seeded Stefanie Doolittle and Stephanie Fuchs of Portland (9-8). In singles action, Baca and Tsan competed in the top “red” draw, and were knocked off in the round of 32. Both won their opening round action in the consolation draw, with Baca advancing to the consolation semifinals before falling to fourth seeded Samantha Smith of Washington, 6-0, 7-5. Meliuk competed in the “white” singles draw, where she was the overall number one seed. She advanced to the quarterfinals, where she lost to Kasia Siwosz of Cal, 6-1, 6-2. In the round of 32, Meliuk was victorious over Danielle Farmer of Gonzaga (6-3, 6-4), before posting a victory over Christina Goehl of Pacific (7-6, 6-1) in the round of 16. Nazarova also took part in the “white” singles draw, where she fell in the round of 32 to Isabelle Floy of Santa Clara (6-3, 6-4) before dropping a decision to Vanja Radunovic of Washington (7-6, 6-4) in the consolation bracket. The Hornets return to action on Oct. 23-26 as they take part in the ITA Northwest Regionals, which will be held on the campus of Stanford University.
