FOUR WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYERS SELECTED TO COMPETE AT RIVIERA/ITA WOMEN’S ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

9/10/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women’s tennis team had five players selected to compete in the 2009 Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships from Oct. 3-11.

Senior Katrina Zheltova
is slated to compete in the Qualifying Draw of the singles tournament, which will take place from Oct. 6-7 at the Riviera Country Club. Zheltova was one of the 24 at-large selections a season ago who automatically advanced into the main draw. This season, she will compete in a 64-player tournament where the top eight competitors will advance to the main draw of 32. Zheltova has been named Big Sky Conference MVP in each of her three seasons at Sacramento State, and was selected No. 56 in the country in the preseason rankings.

Sophomore Maria Meliuk will compete in the singles Pre-Qualifying Draw on Oct. 3-4 at UCLA, which is the starting 64 player tournament, in which the top eight advance to the Qualifying draw. Meliuk was a first team all-Big Sky performer as a freshman, posting a 15-7 record in the spring.

In doubles play, two teams from Sacramento State are likely to compete. Zheltova will team with sophomore Clarisse Baca in the Pre-Qualifying Draw on Oct. 3-4, while Meliuk and senior Aileen Tsan are the first alternate for the draw, and are likely to compete. Meliuk and Tsan went 16-5 during the spring in doubles play, including an 8-0 mark in Big Sky play.

The Hornets return four of their top six singles competitors from a team that won its eighth straight Big Sky title a season ago. Sacramento State has won 62 consecutive matches against conference competition.
